Saviour, Breathe an Evening Blessing

Saviour, breathe an evening blessing
Ere repose our spirits seal
Sin and want we come confessing
Thou canst save, and Thou canst heal

Though destruction walk around us
Though the arrows past us fly
Angel guards from Thee surround us
We are safe if Thou art nigh

Though the night be dark and dreary
Darkness cannot hide from Thee
Thou art He who, never weary
Watchest where Thy people be

Should swift death this night o'ertake us
And our couch become our tomb
May the morn in heaven awake us
Clad in light and deathless bloom

Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun

In The Service Hymnal, this hymn is categorized as a “morning hymn”.

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice

Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart
And with the angels bear thy part
Who all night long unwearied sing
High praise to the eternal king

All praise to Thee, who safe hast kept
And hast refreshed me while I slept
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake
I may of endless life partake

Direct, control, suggest, this day
All I design, or do, or say
That all my powers, with all their might
In Thy sole glory may unite

This hymn has several more verses, not included in the hymnal.  The final verse is…..

Praise God from all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

…..recognizable as a Doxology used by many denominations.  Listen to it here.

In Christ There is no East or West

This hymn comes from The Service Hymnal.  Its message is one of welcome.

In Christ there is no East or West
In Him no South or North
But one great fellowship of love
Throughout the whole wide earth

In Him shall true hearts everywhere
Their high communion find
His service is the golden cord
Close-binding all mankind

In Christ now meet both East and West
In Him meet South and North
All Christly souls are one in Him
Throughout the whole wide earth

Dwelling in Beulah Land

As I was beginning to think about which hymn to blog next, I happened to let The Service Hymnal fall open and “Dwelling in Beulah Land” stared back at me.  I recall my childhood church congregation singing it often.

Far away the noise of strife upon my ear is falling
Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand
Doubt and fear and things of earth in vain to me are calling
None of these shall move me from Beulah Land

Far below the storm of doubt upon the world is beating
Sons of men in battle long the enemy withstand
Safe am I within the castle of God’s Word retreating
Nothing then can reach me—‘tis Beulah Land

Let the stormy breezes blow, their cry cannot alarm me
I am safely sheltered here, protected by God’s hand
Here the sun is always shining, here there’s naught can harm me
I am safe forever in Beulah Land

Viewing here the works of God, I sink in contemplation
Hearing now His blessed voice, I see the way He planned
Dwelling in the Spirit, here I learn of full salvation
Gladly will I tarry in Beulah Land

CHORUS:
I’m living on the mountain, underneath a cloudless sky
I’m drinking at the fountain that never shall run dry
Oh yes, I’m feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulah Land

For the Beauty of the Earth

Would you believe I just rediscovered The Hymn Hideout!  Its been hiding out due to no fault of its own.  The fact is, I’ve been busy focusing on my other blog, Midlife by Farmlight.  Surely, its about time this hymn blog experienced a revival!
In the American Baptist church I grew up in, we used a hymnbook called The Service Hymnal.  From it, I like this hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth”, because some of the beauty of the earth---wildflowers and scenic landscape vistas---are things I enjoy very much.

For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree, and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light.
Lord of all, the Thee we raise,
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.
